Vista has Speech Recognition going for it

David Pogue, a Mac guy who write for the New York Times, posted an interesting and complimentary article about Vista's speech and dictation abilities. It sounds like Microsoft got this aspect right and is well ahead of the Mac. I haven't heard if Leopard will have this!

Voice recognition, the holy grail. But unless it is virtually 100% accurate is only a novelty until you actually want to be productive. This is what killed the Newton. The best handwriting recognition around was still only about 70% accurate. And that was it's early demise. Can you imagine haveing a conversation with someone who only understood 70% of what you said. You would have to keep correcting the misunderstood phrases and eventually would throw your laptop across the room. I know someday we will have 99.99% accurate voice recognition, but until that day, you can't beat a keyboard. It does exactly what you put in. The only errors are due to the typist.

Well, I think that VR has become good enough in recent years to be more than just a gimmick. In fact, the Acura navigation systems have been using it for some time, and it's been given high accolades for its overall usefullness.

I would have to agree, that for basic commands VR works well enough. But if you wanted to replace your keyboard on your computer as in Star Trek, you might cringe at the thought. Someday VR will be there but I am not sure if now is the time.
