iPod Hi Fi R.I.P.

Well, gentlemen, was it inevitable? Apple is no longer selling or manufacturing the much balleyhooed iPod Hi Fi. Are any of you sorry? Do you need a kleenex?

Well, I don't think that Apple did a good job with identifying their market needs with this one. For example, had they gone after the Bose dock at a competitive price and made it as portable, but upped the ante on features or sound quality, then they could have made a dent. But, the Hi Fi was very awkwardly positioned in price, portability and overall design. It's no surprise that they are discontinuing it.

It follows the way of the Apple digital camera, and the old Apple printers. It was a market they weren't ready for. If they want to go into the speaker business you can't just offer one product. You have to commit to a product line. It is not like the iPod market where you can come out with one really cool gadget and everyone will buy. The iPod Hi-Fi got good reviews but speakers cannot have the typical WOW response of Apple products.
