Gents,
As Lo knows, I pulled the trigger on an iPod touch. I was very excited to get it going last night, only to find out that, while USB is backwards compatible, the iPod touch is not! I do not have USB 2.0 on my PC - only 1.1 and Firewire. So, I was unable to link the touch to my PC, and it does not let you do anything without first synching! So, I have a beautiful iPod paperweight at home until I employ a solution! Ugh!!!! It is at this moment that I am very upset with Apple for no longer supporting Firewire. I am looking into a card slot USB 2.0 adaptor now to see if that's a solution I can use. I had not planned on getting a new PC at the moment.

Le,
I had a similar problem with my Powerbook laptop. It came with USB 1.1 and Firewire but USB 2.0 was not available when it was made. Well USB 2.0 took over 1.1 and I was stuck. So I bought a PMCIA card with 4 USB 2.0 ports. Work fine and is a lot cheaper than buying a new PC.
I don't know how much it is to have both firewire and USB 2.0 in one device but I am sure Apple debated it for some time before dropping Firewire. I'm sure it is economics. Especially since Apple made USB 2.0 standard on its PC's too. This is a big step for Apple. In the past they would not choose to standardize to the industry. Apple stuck with SCCI ports for a long time while the PC world had another standard. Externals had to be specially made for Macs. So even though SCCI was a better standard performance wise, it forced Mac owners to have limited peripherals that were more expensive. I have read reports that say Firewire is better in many ways to USB 2.0 but at least Apple gives you the option on their computers.
I think these cards cost about $50 or less. It is a band aid solution.
And I am happy to report, Stitch, that I have given Le my USB 2.0 card for use on his PC. I eagerly await his report on how it worked!
