Microsoft takeover of Yahoo
Have you guys heard the news? Microsoft wants to buy Yahoo in a hostile takeover bid. There were talks before that broke down, but now Microsoft wants to take Yahoo. Supposedly Jerry Yang, founder and current CEO, wants to maintain Yahoo's independence. Microsoft wants to take them over because it would help them compete with Google. Is this a good idea? I can't help but dislike Microsoft swallowing up more of the competition. What's your take?

What I don't understand is why Microsoft thinks Yahoo is worth $45 BILLION dollars. How long does it take to recoup that cost. Their offer was about 63% higher than its current net worth. In my view, Yahoo is on the way down. It's like buying Kmart. Oh, wait, Sears did that. Maybe they think that with the golden touch of MS they can breath new life into Yahoo. Does MS have a track record of doing this? I don't think so. They, in my view, tend to buy up and coming companies which have not fully blossomed and then become mediocre under MS umbrella. But then again, I am not a high paid stock analyst. So what do I know.
Stitch, you would make a better stock analyst then a lot of them already there! I agree with you that Microsoft would just turn them into mediocrity. I still have a Yahoo email address, but we use it for mostly garbage email. I give our my Yahoo address when I think there is a possibility of getting spam. Yahoo mail doesn't compare to Gmail, in my opinion. I just think Yahoo would sink even further under Microsoft's "guidance"!
That's funny about Yahoo mail. I used it for the same purpose. Garbage email account. I actually use Gmail mainly because my email address will remain the same if I change internet service provider. I thought the .mac account was your email of choice?
Actually, there is a complex hierarchy in place with our email. At the top is .Mac mail, which is our "pristine" account. I try really hard to keep it spam free using the 5 aliases that come with the service. I also communicate with Apple exclusively through .Mac mail.
Then comes Gmail, which has an excellent Spam filter and gobs of space. I like the email layout, and it is very easy to use. I do end up having to clean out the Spam in case there is something it accidentally threw out, but that is rare.
Then comes Yahoo, which has a decent filter, but I think is mediocre as an online email service. But it has two big things going for it: 1. It has unlimited storage, and 2. We have lots of history with the Yahoo address, and all of it is saved on those servers.
Finally I have two work email addresses, but those get so much garbage that I try not to depend on them too much for anything personal!
