RIM files "multitouch" patent

Well, gents, I believe this harkens the era of first real competition for the iPhone. RIM just filed a multitouch patent, with the intent that the technology would show up in their phones. RIM already makes excellent smart phones, and I think they are the ones who can give Apple some real competition. I do believe, however, that Apple has incredible leverage with its software prowess and head start. This really is a good thing, because I think great technologies will come out of this. What's your take?

Apple has raised the bar so that the touchscreen interface is the new standard. Others will follow. But just being able to touch the screen as input is not the key component, it is how the software supports that input. This is where Apple shines. If the other phone companies still make cludgy interfaces, but with a touchscreen input, they will fail miserably. But RIM has shown forsight in the past so maybe they can do it. My personal experience with the RIM's is that the interface is not what makes them sell. It is the push email that made RIM so big. This was their key innovation.

Gents,

I have to say that having owned a Blackberry for a couple of months now, I am very impressed with the product that RIM produces. It's worked very well, and I do not have any major issues with it. I have the Curve. I even posted a comment to this site using the Curve's internet access. Though the interfaces to the web for non-iPhone cell phones tend to be clumsy, I was able to do it nonetheless. And, actually, aside from the iPhone, I think that RIM has the best web interface for a cell phone (not including things like the Nokia Tablet, which is not a phone, but an internet-specific portable device).

So, this could be pretty good competition for Apple.
