The End of an Era

Well Stitch, Sony will cease production of the floppy disc:

Floppy Demise

I still remember inserting the good ol' floppy into the Macs of old. My G3 has the floppy drive. And I still remember what a leap it was when Zip drives came out! It just looked like a floppy on steroids.

But at this point, especially as online computing and storage takes hold, lots of portable media will be disappearing. I admit to a little nostalgia - I'll miss the era of excitement as we all realized what personal computing could do, and portable media was an essential part of that!

Would you like to share some of your thoughts and feelings?

The floppy disk is irrelevant since most of the software on floppies does not run on modern systems. I actually miss the fact that OS9 does not run on the new macs. I always liked the idea that I could run any old Mac software even on the latest machines. Even if it just for nostalgic reasons. Like CricketGraph. I used this on the old Mac Plus and it was way ahead of its time where you double click the axis to make changes to settings for the axis. In Excel it is hard to click in the right place to get the axis clicked.

Ah yes, CricketGraph. I almost forgot, Stitch. Those were the days when a simple yet very effective program really stood out. I still remember a program I used in high school called "Cactus Graph" for the Apple II. Man, those were the days.

Correction: it was called "Cactus PLot".
