iPhone open to developers!

On the plus side, Jobs used the WWDC to announce that iPhone will be open to developers! That's pretty big, and takes away the criticism that the apps would be limited. To me, that's the big announcement.

I was reading that this is not typical application development on the iPhone. Jobs called it using Web 2.0 technology. It would be more along the lines of widgets on OSX. You can't get to the guts and make something wildly new. But you can use something like javascript to poke around in a small library of functionality that Apple gives you access to. Jobs said it was a compromise to keep the operating system secure. Still some of those widgets are pretty cool. Small simple apps are all you really need on a cell phone anyway. Mathmatica won't be ported soon.
