Dual 4-core processors at a speed of 3 GHz now in the top of the line Mac Pro. 8 Cores of blistering speed for the software sophisticated enough to take advantage. $4000 for the maxed out (all the trimmings) Mac Pro. Anyone need to design the next Space Shuttle?

This amount of HP is far more than you need to design the space shuttle. This is for serious gamers. That is what drives the computer industry. And maybe some rendering farms. You can't get enough computer generated films. I'm sure hollywood can't wait till CG is so good you cannnot tell if it is a real actor or rendered actor. Imagine the cost savings.
Isn't it nice to have all these updates? I still remember when the top of the line desktop mac was stuck at 500 MHz for like 8 months or more when we were still using the G4. Times have changed for the better!
It really makes you wonder that at the rate that PC's increase in speed, what will the future applications do with all this horsepower. It baffles the mind. Back in 1986 when I started my first real job, PC's were just being used by companies. The IBM XT ran at I believe 8MHz ( yes megahertz ) and only had dual floppy drives and cost about $20K. That wasn't all that long ago too.
One possible application for all this power could be used in robotics. I believe what has been holding back robots, at least in the home, has been limited processing speed. You need to process a lot of data to sense and respond to your surroundings in real time. I have seen a few programs which basically predict an exponential explosion in development in this field. Maybe soon a robot will clean your house, do the laundry, maintain your pool, and make you dinner when you come home from work.
The vacuum cleaning ability is particularly attractive to me. I'd love to have a machine do the dishes, but I'd be afraid it would break my Apple mug just purchased from Apple, Inc!!!
For me, a robot that can clean house is the true apogee of household robotics!
