Gentlemen, check out the following link:
Excel Editing
As you know, the iPhone 3G is on the way! I was very impressed with the effort Apple has made to make the iPhone not only a consumer's dream, but also an Enterprise must have gadget! The future definitely looks bright!
You may also have found that as of yet, EXCEL and Word documents are viewable, but not editable. Well, the above link points to an article about Mariner Calc, which is a program allowing EDITING of EXCEL spreadsheets on the iPhone!!! Wow! If it's a reliable program, it could be huge! Not to mention other companies wanting to sell their version of an Excel editor on the iPhone app store. What you you guys think?

I rememeber trying out the Mariner spreadsheet program a few years ago. I was looking for an alternative to buying Excel for looking at the few spreadsheets I needed to view. My impressions was that it was similar to Excel in only the basic features. Now with Open Office, which can do almost everything Excel can do, and with some additional features too, this is the program for me. The Mac version of OpenOffice has always lagged the Windows version. It would be nice to see if they port a scaled down version of OpenOffice to the iPhone. All of the code is Open source so all you need is a computer guru with a need for a new cool project.
As for a full spreadsheet progrom on the iPhone, this may be a "just because you can" program, which would eat up too much of the memory. But the more basic features would be helpful. It would be nice if you could add features in modules so you can only add the features that you need. Avoiding the bloatware of Excel, where 90% of the features are unused by 90% of the users.
The iPhone SDK does sound like it will be inspiring some really good ports of software. It looks very promising.
