Stitch, I have mixed feelings about Ping. I'm just not sure people want yet another online social networking tool. And yet, I want it to be successful. I haven't tried it for the same reason other folks might be hesitant - do I want to be checking and interacting in yet another online venue? What do you think, Stitch?

I thing for you and me, Ping is hard to comprehend. At least for me, I just don't get the huge popularity of social networks. They seem so trivial to me. Unlike the highbrow content on MacNight which I guess is a social network of two.
Facebook has made the people who started it, very very rich. Ping in my opinion is trying to ride the wave of this social networking thing. I am not sure if Apple understands what will make it work but they needed to put it out there and let it evolve.
Does Apple think that iTunes could end up being a replacement for Facebook? I doubt it but look at how quickly Facebook knocked out MySpace. All it takes is some new feature to excite the masses and everyone jumps ship. With the linking they have to music they have at least a shot. Maybe they will just end up just linking into Facebook itself like so many web sites are doing now. Ping has a chance to go big or it may end up like Dashboard widgets in OSX, a minor feature that is kinda cool.
Very eloquently put, Stitch. I need your perspective on the Mac world because it evolves so darned quickly! Like you, I still remember all the talk about MySpace and how all the teenagers were using it, and Facebook comes along and sends the site to the bench!
You're right - Ping is Apple's attempt to get into the social networking scene from the music perspective. I know you can connect to Facebook through Yahoo, so I would also anticipate Apple do the same if Facebook's popularity continues.
And I agree that our conversations are very sophisticated indeed!
Facebook is actually expanded beyond the teenager market. Many many non teens are using it. The reason, connect up with people you have lost contact with throughout your past life. And I think the other biggy is a blog about your own life that gets automatically broadcasted to everyone who is your "friend" in Facebook world. Regular blogs force you to check for updates yourself. Its a way to keep in touch with many other people at the same time without actually making direct contact with them, as in a phone call. For that matter it kind of replaces email too in a way. Twitter is Facebook in real time. I still don't get it myself.
I don't get Twitter at all. I think you start getting into the minutia of a day that nobody really cares about. But, that's my opinion. A friend of mine did tell me about Facebook and said exactly what you said. You can keep up, but not necessarily exchange directly with these folks.
Honestly, I now have a Facebook account within the last month, and already I have connected with quite a few old high school friends who Robin and I always liked.
Am I a Facebook monster? No. But it sure is nice to occasionally see what these folks are up to!
