Gentlemen, the internet has been buzzing lately with rumors of Microsoft's iPod killer, the Zune. Supposedly one can download music directly to the player wirelessly. Additionally, the new player is supposed to have the same model of success as the iPod - it will have a dedicated online music store that caters to the new device, much as the iTunes music store caters to the iPod.
Is this enough to dethrone the iPod as the number one digital player on the market? Will consumers flock to the new device for the new features? What does Apple have to do to counter this competition?

Even with a good product and marketing, it's tough to dethrone any top product like the iPod. It will be interesting to be sure, but I would not think that the iPod will be brought down drastically, even if MS gets some market share.

That's for sure, Le. What interests me is the Microsoft player is supposed to be "linked" to the XBox. I don't know how, but I still feel that the market of people who listen to music is larger than that which plays games on an XBox. I'm curious if MS will actually go that XBox route when marketing to begin with.
Additionally, if this player really does link up wirelessly with the internet, would people (the masses) really see that as a must have option? And finally, will this device be on the order of size as the ipod nano, which is the best seller for Apple? I doubt it, which leaves the nano and its next generations still feasting on the "I want a tiny, ultra portable music player" market.
The Xbox group at MS might be the only compentent group that may be able to pull off an iPod killer. But they need to do more than just duplicate the iPod. Maybe the link to the Xbox is that it will also be a portable gaming device too. This could put a large dent in Apple's market since most music is downloaded by teenagers but there aren't may girls who are hooked on the Xbox so this may miss them.
I see an awful lot of young ladies wearing those pink iPod nano bands while working out at the gym! Let's hope the female population of nano users skyrockets!
