The price of the Zune is set to match that of the 30 Gb iPod with video. Is this enough to bring the masses on board? Microsoft admits they will take a loss on the product at the beginning. They have done the same with the XBox, and it seems to be doing well. Can Microsoft repeat the same trick with the Zune? Comments?

I don't think they have anything that great which will entice enough people to go that route. The X-box was a leap ahead of the playstation. The Zune doesn't seem to have what it takes. I am sure the TV will be flooded with Ads saying how great it really is. All I can say, is bleed money MS....
What bothers me is Microsoft has so much cash that they can stay in a market way longer than their product's appeal should sustain it. And that seems to be their strategy right now.
Something tells me that this market is different than some of the other markets they have dominated. We should also note that companies like Amazon and Google compete successfully with the MS juggernaut. So what has often happened in the past is not necessarily happening now!
This is clearly a response to Apple's new pricing, and I believe it will have little to no effect on the potential of the Zune. To displace the iPod, the Zune would have to have been almost revolutionary.

Microsoft claims it is revolutionary! A way to create "communities". I'm not so sure!
