Home Theatres at Risk?

I found an amazing article that, if true, indicates new lows for a segment of the entertainment industry. Apple is increasingly intertwined with how entertainment is distributed, so I feel this is a relevant issue. The upshot is that the MPAA is considering a registration fee for Home Theatres because other people can come over and watch a DVD without having paid for the DVD. This is stunning if it is true! Any thoughts?

Home Theatre Registration

I don't think will ever fly. Lawyers are always looking at ways to legislate new restrictions but the backlash from such a registration would surely stop it. I thought the current rule was that you could not charge a fee for someone to watch it otherwise you are not abiding by the copyright. Very few people have a home theatre large enough to cause loss revenue to them. Actually I think these home theatres would drive up their revenue. If someone comes over to watch a DVD on your home theatre and they just love it. Then they are inclined to purchase their own home theatre of their own and then watch more DVD's. Very shortsighted.

I agree that it's absurd for the movie studios to think that home theatres hurt or could hurt the industry. Like Stitch says, they make boatloads off of DVD sales! If anything, home theatres put a lot of money in the studios' pockets. Remember that the studios said the same thing about VHS, but in the end VHS greatly enhanced the movie industry.
