Le, we must set aside our petty differences, as there is serious work to be done! We must address the truly salient issue at hand: is the black Macbook worth the extra cost? I am inclined to opt for the white Macbook myself, but for the less than practical reason that it pays homage to the white iBook predecessor! What do you think, gentlemen?

I feel that it is clear that Apple is cashing in on the 'cool factor,' by charging such a premium for the black MacBook. It is certainly within their purview to do so, but I think they risk alienating their market. I think it's a bad move. The only way I can see that it could be truly justified is if, for some reason not known to us, the costs for manufacturing the black model is significantly higher than the white - where Apple had plenty of contracts in place for purchasing the white material, but had to go back and get a lesser deal in order to purchase the black.

I believe Apple is using marketing to charge a premium for the black Macbook. This is typical in car sales too. Each step of upgrade is just a little more than the previous one. I am sure it is based on studies of buying behaviour. There is the stripped down model, the middle of the road model, and then the holy grail (aka black Macbook). Most people will buy the middle of the road version, but there are always some people who will be willing to shell out a little more for something different than the rest.
There can be no question that marketing is the primary driver. The differences do not justify the higher price. Perhaps they learned this from the iPod nano, and decided to take advantage. (God I hope they don't raise the price of the black nano!!))
